Indian Traditional Paintings have flourished in the form of art from
the very early civilization. This is evident from the remnants that have been
discovered. Paintings of the ancient civilizations depict their way of living
and beliefs. It is also believed that through art, their beliefs are expressed
because then, written scripts were not yet developed or existed.
The Tanjore Paintings India is a form of
miniature painting. This form of painting has special importance in the
Southern part of India because it developed in Tanjore, Tamil Nadu. But,
Tanjore is not its birth place, this art form developed here because of the
migration of people from different states like Gujrat, Maharashtra, Mysore,
Bijapur and Andhra Pradesh. Attention is given to minute details and every
creation is truly a celebration of the beauty.
Indian paintings
are influenced by civilizations- their traditions, cultures and that is why
paintings also depict the cultural changes, from the Buddhist influence to
Mughal paintings to Company paintings of British Raj, every period is reflected
in such paintings.
Initially, the
paintings were made on walls and they were large in size but gradually the
concept of miniature painting came in around the 12th century. These
miniature paintings were first created on palm-leaf manuscripts.
Paintings can be
classified into 2 parts- Murals and Miniatures. Murals are those which are made
on solid walls whereas miniatures are those which are made small in size in
perishable substances like paper or cloth.
