Indian Paintings Have Evolved To Become A Fusion Of Various Cultures And Traditions

Indian Traditional Paintings have flourished in the form of art from the very early civilization. This is evident from the remnants that have been discovered. Paintings of the ancient civilizations depict their way of living and beliefs. It is also believed that through art, their beliefs are expressed because then, written scripts were not yet developed or existed.


Indian paintings are influenced by civilizations- their traditions, cultures and that is why paintings also depict the cultural changes, from the Buddhist influence to Mughal paintings to Company paintings of British Raj, every period is reflected in such paintings.

Initially, the paintings were made on walls and they were large in size but gradually the concept of miniature painting came in around the 12th century. These miniature paintings were first created on palm-leaf manuscripts.

Paintings can be classified into 2 parts- Murals and Miniatures. Murals are those which are made on solid walls whereas miniatures are those which are made small in size in perishable substances like paper or cloth.

History of emergence of Tanjore paintings in India

The Tanjore Paintings India is a form of miniature painting. This form of painting has special importance in the Southern part of India because it developed in Tanjore, Tamil Nadu. But, Tanjore is not its birth place, this art form developed here because of the migration of people from different states like Gujrat, Maharashtra, Mysore, Bijapur and Andhra Pradesh. Attention is given to minute details and every creation is truly a celebration of the beauty.
